The Raytools BM109 is a water-cooled auto-focusing fiber laser cutting head released by Raytools AG in 2017 for sources of 1.5 kW and below. It uses a D28 lens set, a 26 mm clear aperture, and a built-in motor that moves the focusing lens through roughly 17 mm of travel. What Goes Into a BM109 - The Short Answer

Ordering for this head is simple once you separate two numbers that both appear on its datasheet and describe completely different parts:

  1. D28 is the lens set. D32 is the nozzle. The collimating and focusing lenses inside a BM109 are 28 mm in diameter. The nozzle that screws into the ceramic holder at the bottom has a 32 mm body with an M14 thread. Both numbers are correct at the same time, and mixing them is the single most common wrong order on this head.
  2. Two protective window sizes, not one. Ø24.9 × 1.5 mm on the collimator side, Ø27.9 × 4.1 mm on the focus side. They look similar in a sleeve and are not interchangeable - the thicker one is thicker because it is the one absorbing spatter energy.

Field note: on 1.5 kW machines the most common quality complaint is dross on 6 mm and thicker mild steel. Nine times out of ten the operator is running a tip that is too small and compensating with oxygen pressure. BM109 Optics - Choosing Focal Length and Reading Window Damage

  • F125 versus F150 is a job decision, not an upgrade.
    A shorter focal length gives a tighter spot and narrower kerf, which suits thin stainless detail and small holes. A longer focal length gives more depth of focus and standoff, which suits thicker mild steel and forgives sheet that is not perfectly flat. Changing focal length changes every parameter derived from spot size - plan a test sheet, not a live job.
  • Concentric burn marks are a gas or nozzle problem, not a glass problem.
    Scorching around the centre of a Ø27.9 × 4.1 mm window usually means back-reflection or disturbed gas flow from a damaged nozzle. Replace the window, then inspect the nozzle before restarting - otherwise the new window follows the old one inside a shift.
  • A cloudy collimator window means a seal failed, not that the glass was poor.
    The Ø24.9 × 1.5 mm window sits well away from the cut zone and should stay clean for a long time. If it fogs, dirty purge air or coolant vapour is entering the head. Fit new glass with a new seal, and check compressed-air filtration before blaming the part.
  • Never wipe a Raytools optic dry.
